Review for Kallimni Arabi Bisheesh

Kallimni ‘Arabi Bishweesh is part of a planned series of Egyptian Colloquial Arabic course books for adults. As the first of this series, It combines authentic everyday cultural content, comprehensive grammar, and real-life functional language. and complies with the guidelines for teaching and learning Arabic of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

This book is designed for the beginner levels, and covers the Novice Lower – Mid levels of language proficiency according to ACTFL guidelines. The book will help students to communicate orally in a number of survival situations. It recycles everyday vocabulary and progressively builds and reinforces the students’ knowledge of sentence structure through presentations and practices that focus on real-life situations. It also aims to teach students Arabic script, enabling them to read and write as they learn to communicate in the language so at the end of the course students will be able to use a reasonable range of both spoken and written Arabic. This volume covers the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with particular emphasis on listening and speaking.

This course book is aimed at total beginners who have no reading and writing background in Egyptian Colloquial Arabic.
By the end of this course students should be able to fulfill the following tasks:

• Introduce themselves and ask people for their names and nationalities.
• Use polite formulae for greetings and expressing basic courtesies.
• Respond and initiate limited conversation.
• Ask about things they need to know such as timetables for trains or movies and booking train or theater tickets.
• Give instructions and directions to taxi drivers.
• Shop for groceries or gifts for friends.
• Carry out daily transactions and use short sentences about money and numbers in their daily purchases.
• Talk about their daily routines in simple short sentences.
• Make simple requests and offer simple apologies.
• Talk about personal possessions.
• Read and write simple sentences and words.

Kallimni ‘Arabi Bishweesh consists of 10 modules with a revision unit at the end of each group of five modules. Each module is structured as follows:

New language points and vocabulary are presented in context through listening or speaking to highlight form, use, and pronunciation.

Each presentation is followed by a number of exercise types which offer both controlled and free activities, often involving all four skills.

Teaching Script Section
A skill-based section in which the student learns the script through clear illustrations and a number of tasks which simulate real-life situations and use the vocabulary and structure taught in the module.

A section providing a quick overview of all the language points taught in each module.

Kallimni ‘Arabi Bishweesh also contains the following:

The book presents the required vocabulary for each function and presentation within each module supported with illustrations. At the end of the book a translated glossary of the vocabulary used in each module is provided in order of module.
Listening texts are recorded as MP3 files or CD for class and personal use.
The recorded material also includes language presentations, the language points, pronunciation drills, and listening activities, as well as reading texts. A variety of native speaker voices are used to enrich the student’s exposure to spoken language in its natural context.

Listening Texts
The written texts for the listening material are written in Arabic and presented at the end of each free practice.

Kallimni ‘Arabi Bishweesh covers 60-70 classroom teaching hours. The teacher is free to use the Practices section or the Remember section according to the students’ needs and classroom time constraints. The book is designed in a way that allows the teacher to structure the lessons as needed. However, since the vocabulary and grammar are used cumulatively throughout the units, it is recommended that teachers follow the sequence in which the lessons are arranged in the book. The teacher is responsible for developing and initiating further practice as the book is not designed to be used for self study, but to encourage close interaction between the teacher and students, and between the students themselves.
The last two lessons are novice high level and considered as two additional lessons to prepare the students for the next book in the series.

The early lessons are supported by a section of transliteration at the end of each module covering the presentations, most of the listening tasks, and some of the practice exercises that require reading. The transliteration is gradually withdrawn from chapter 6 onward and is then only used to support listening texts. The grammar sections are not transliterated as it is assumed that the student will be fully supported by the teacher.
